Techno Tyranny, Digital Enclosures & Hospitable States
Tuesday June 10, 2025 12:00 - 13:00 CEST
Liberal democracies are everywhere on the way out. Tyranny seems to be the order of the day. Yet progressive and even centrist democratic forces seem to lose ground.

This has three main reasons:

For one, the new tyrannies are still poorly understood, especially regarding their media-technological foundations.

Secondly, the implication of progressive and leftist politics in its own decline is not thoroughly being addressed. It is, in fact, often distorted into a false opposition between ‘class war’ vs ‘culture war’. Thirdly, an enticing offer from the side of progressive forces is still lacking - and has been lacking for decades. Why be good if being evil is so much more fun?

This roundtable will try to address these three challenges: What are the technological/media-theoretical specificities of 21st century tyrannies? What is the role capitalism plays in its rise - with particular emphasis on the 'original accumulation' of cyberspace in the the past 10 years? And what can be a springboard for a political leap forward?
